Acrylic on canvas
Barriers is a commentary on the state of human societal interactions. It questions how the barriers we place between and amongst ourselves influence and impact each other. The barriers are depicted through the black vertical and horizontal lines. Both directions were chosen to represent the different types of barriers that can exist: race, social rank, geography or any of the myriad barriers that we all create or have to live with.
Especially in the top part of the painting, I also wanted to demonstrate that it is in the power of society and individuals to dilute and even destroy barriers and how, in turn, it will start influencing what is on the other side of the barrier.
